The history of the Tower
It was served as:
a royal fortress
a palace - the principal residence for all English kings
a royal mint
a royal menagerie,
an arsenal, a repository for the Crown Jewels
a prison and place of execution.
The White Tower
The White Tower was erected by William the Conqueror shorlty after the Battle of Hastings in 1066. Over the years, this grew into the Tower of London and has been used as a royal residence, a state prison, a zoo, a mint, an armory, and the repository for the crown jewels. But perhaps its most infmaous use was as a torture center for the powers that be.
Beefeaters. Who are they?
The yeoman warders or "Beefeaters" as they are often called are found at the Tower of London. Wearing dark-blue tunics with red braid (a uniform given to them in 1958), they are probably some of the most photographed men in Britain.
The Beefeaters, all ex-army men, are used mainly as guides. They are also involved in the security of this historic building.
Why are the ravens so important?
People keep the ravens in the Tower of London and look after them very well as the y believe that London will be rich while the ravens live there. There is also a legend that if the ravens leave the Tower, the kingdom will fall
The most interesting ceremony is the ceremony of the keys. It takes place every night and is 700 years old!
