  2. Why I am writing this work

  3. About Africa.

  4. The animal world of Africa.

  5. The problems connected with the animals in Africa.

  6. Safari parks as one the ways of protecting animals

  7. Conclusions

Hello! This is me

My name is Andrew Mironenko. I am from Moscow. Now I live in the capital of Guinea, Conakry. I go to the Russian school under the Embassy of the Russian Federation in Guinea. I am in the fourth form. I love animals very much. Two red-ears turtles live at my home, they are very beautiful and tame. At school where I study I interviewed my classmates. I asked them questions about animals in Africa:

  1. Do you like animals?

  2. Do you know anything about animals in Africa?

  3. Do you know what we must do to protect animals in Africa?

  4. Do you know how to behave with animals?

The results show that my friends like animals but most of them don’t know what animals live in Africa, how to behave with the animals, how to behave in safari-park, how to protect animals. You can see it from this picture (These are the Yes answers)

That is why I am writing this work. In my work I’d like to tell my friends about animals of Africa, about the problems connected with the disappearance of some kinds of them and I’ll try to find ways of prevention from their illegal destruction.

First I would like to tell you a little about the geographical position of the country and about its climate.
The republic Guinea is in the Western Africa. It borders on Mali, Senegal, Guinea-Bissau, Liberia and Sierra Leone. It is washed by the Atlantic Ocean, forming a 320-kilometer coastal line. A total area of the country is 245, 9 thousand sq. km. The climate of Guinea is equatorial monsoonal, in summer it is damp, in winter it is dry. The hottest month is April (30’C); the coldest one is August (26’C). A dry, dusty, wind, called “harmattan” blows from the north in January and February.

The fauna of Africa is extremely rich and various. In savannas there are a lot of giraffes, buffalos, antelopes, gazelles, zebras, rhinoceroses and elephants. We can also meet monkeys and predatory (lions, hyenas, cheetahs, jackals), such birds as ostriches, crowned cranes, a bird-secretary, marabou, Egyptian vulture. Lizards and snakes are numerous here too. Some animals in Africa are very dangerous and we must be very careful while walking.

Now I want to tell you about some representatives of the animal world of Africa:

Elephants are the biggest four-legged animals. They are grey and sometimes white. They haven’t got hair. Elephants come from Africa and Asia.

African elephants have got very big ears and Asia elephants have got little ears.

Elephants have got a very long nose – a trunk and two long white teeth – tusks.

Elephants eat a lot of food and drink a lot of water. They eat leaves, grass, and fruit.

Elephants can swim – they are very good swimmers. Elephants love water.

When the elephant sleeps, it usually stands. And as you know elephants help man to work.

The crocodile is the most ancient inhabitant of our planet. It is the contemporary of dinosaurs. Crocodiles are the reptiles. The largest reptile is the Nile crocodile. It has got a streamline body, a mighty long tail and short legs. Crocodiles can swim and dive. The crocodile is difficult to see near the coast: you can see only eyes stick out of water. Crocodiles hunt usually at night. And they live about 100 years.

Chimpanzees are close relatives of the man. They live both in tropical woods, and in savannas. The chimpanzees are very peaceful and good-natured animals. They eat grass and insects, and don’t eat meat at all. Step chimpanzees sometimes hunt young gazelles and pigs. The chimpanzees live in a family of 20 or more animals. Marmosets are small long-tailed monkeys. They live in the forest. They can climb the trees, jump and make faces. They eat leaves, grass, nuts, insects and even birds.

Unfortunately, the wild nature of Africa is in danger. Many kinds of animals are killed by hunters; the places of their living are destroyed. To solve a problem of protecting animals of Africa is uneasy. However many African countries today protect the wild animals in national parks. The wild nature of Africa is one of the greatest riches of a planet. People should find new ways to live on the Earth, not destroying its animals and the nature.

Ecologists warn that in Western Africa there will be no wild animals in 20 years. Animals simply will be eaten. Some poor African people kill and eat everything that runs flies or creeps - monkeys, snakes, porcupines and even pangolins. People make bags, purses, footwear, belts from a leather of crocodiles, antelopes, monkeys, monitor lizards and sell them.

Many people buy these products and more animals are killed. People can buy meat of wild animals in the markets and even in the streets of some of Western-African countries, though it is forbidden. And it is awful.

It is very nice that the leaders of some countries started some projects to protect animals. In Guinea for example China realises the program of protecting chimpanzee. Their results are hopeful.

More than that people help animals by putting them in national parks and safari parks. In Zimbabwe (the state in Southern Africa) there are ten reserves and national parks, where you can find elephants, rhinoceroses, giraffes, lions, leopards, hippopotamuses. There animals are not in danger in safari parks.

In safari-park animals live in the open. There are no cages and fences there. As rule safari-park is open from 10 o’clock. Visitors go through the safari-park in cars or park buses.

There are three important things for visitors to remember while visiting safari parks:

  • You must drive slowly

  • You mustn’t open the car windows

  • You mustn’t get out of the car in the places where monkeys, lions, tigers, zebras, giraffes and other wild animals live free.

So I have learned many interesting things about the animals of Africa where my family lives now and told my friends about them I am sure people must try their best to protect animals here. There must be laws protecting nature, children must be taught to behave with animals.

While writing this work I read some books;
