1. Конкурс понимания письменного текста
Текст для чтения
[Mary McCarthy's new novel “Cannibals and Missionaries” has recently come out. Here she talks to Miriam Gross about it.]
Most of my books have been in some way political, but I suppose this is the first one which deals directly with what you might call headline material: terrorism, hijacking and so forth.
I've only met one person who has actually been hijacked, but of course once political hijacking started - as opposed to people blowing up a plane to collect the insurance on their mother-in-law - everybody, the minute they got on to a plane or even waiting in the departure lounge, began to ask themselves what they would do if this happened to them. I know I certainly did, in so far as I'm anybody or everybody.
People, in my view anyway, inevitably began to project themselves into such a dilemma and ask themselves how they would behave -just as during the war and right after the war people asked themselves how they would have behaved under Nazi torture; that still goes on as a matter of fact. And it was partly this which drew me to the subject. I was also interested in reading in the papers about passengers who'd been hijacked finally disembarking and saying things like: 'The hijackers were perfect gentlemen.' Middle-aged housewives making these statements.
But once I started the book it came to me that I had to show at least one of the terrorists from the inside. I realized that it would be refusing the jumps not to describe such an event from a terrorist's point of view as well. It was as if they were speaking out of the dark. 'Hey, teacher, we're here too.’
I don't think this means I've romanticized them - terrorism is terrifying. But
we've seen, after all, that in many of these cases the terrorists find it impossible to commit murder or use extreme violence on someone they've got to know. That happened to Moro*, I believe: the people who'd been holding him apparently had to send for other Red Brigadists to execute him. They couldn't do it themselves.
It's true, I suppose that I have a certain sympathy for the main terrorist character in my novel: it would be hard not to respond to his kind of total dedication and self-sacrifice, though not of course to extorting sacrifice from others. But I also show how terrorists paint themselves into a corner because their aims are impossible - that's the whole point.
I've said to myself that “Cannibals and Missionaries” is my last novel. Something I've observed is that one loses one's social perceptions, they get blunted and dimmer as one gets older - it's partly a matter of eyesight. You can continue writing poetry and essays and so on, but to be a novelist you have to have this alert social thing.
Aldo Moro: former Italian Prime Minister, killed by terrorists in 1978.
Hijacking – угон самолета; hijacker – бандит, налетчик; insurance – страховая премия; disembark - to leave an aircraft; extort - вымогать; perception – восприятие.
