However, proving that such an algorithm satisfies certain performance guarantees seems to be a very hard problem. Understanding this dichotomy and gaining a theoretical understanding of randomized search heuristics therefore is an important task. Since randomized search heuristics are nothing more than particular randomized algorithms, this also belongs to the area of design and analysis of randomized algorithms. This workshop not only is colocated with ICALP, but also takes place right after GECCO, a leading conference on evolutionary computation. Aim The aim of this workshop is to stimulate discussions among people already working on these problems and those with a general background in randomized algorithmics as well as to point out interesting topics for future work. Tutorials There will be two tutorials by leading researchers in that field such that people not specialized in the theory of randomized search heuristics can follow the technical talks.
Tutorial Speakers Anne Auger (INRIA Futurs, Paris) Carsten Witt (University of Dortmund) Technical Talks / Submission of Abstracts Technical talks by researchers working on various aspects of the theory of randomized search heuristics will follow the tutorials. Researches working on theoretical aspects of randomized search heuristics are invited to submit proposals for a talk in form of a short abstract (one single page) to [log in to unmask] The decision about whether the proposed talk is accepted for the workshop program will be made within two weeks after the submission has been received. There is no deadline for the submission of abstracts but we advice to make submissions as soon as possible. The conference goals are to provide a forum for advanced methods from neural computing, machine learning, fuzzy logic, evolutionary algorithms, agent-based methods, quantum computing, and related techniques and their combination to efficient systems answering challenges from all disciplines of Science, Business, Engineering, Automotive, Medicine, Health, Environment, Horticulture, Agriculture, Bio-security, Biometrics, Bioinformatics, or Social Sciences. In particular, approaches to systematic or automated intelligent system design, also explicitly including constraints of physical embodiments, distributed systems and implementations, as well as dynamic aspects of system evolution or adaptation to changing environment is a major focus of the conference. Submission and Publication: Full paper of 6 pages (A4 size) for oral presentation and 4 pages for poster presentation should be formatted following the IEEE Journal format and be submitted via the conference home page by 15 May, 2007. As in the last years, the proceedings will be published by the IEEE computer society (confirmation pending). Selected and extended papers will be published in several special issues including the Intl. Journal of Hybrid Intelligent Systems (more to be announced). Also negative results (e.g., a component shows poor performance for the majority of test instances) are of considerable importance in hybridization. Such results have often been ignored in standard metaheuristics research. Furthermore, the enlarged number of parameters of the combined concepts attracts more attention to the design of algorithms and the tuning of parameters. This workshop aims at papers that give good examples for carefully designed and well-analyzed hybrid metaheuristics. Researchers are explicitly encouraged to address statistical validity of their results. The extraction of guidelines for the general design of hybrid metaheuristics would be desirable. All accepted papers will be published in the LNCS series of Springer. HM 2007 is organized as a single-track conference and a non-profit event. -------------------------------- (UN)SUBSCRIPTION INSTRUCTIONS: - Send submissions (articles) to [log in to unmask] DO NOT send submissions to the [log in to unmask] address. - To subscribe send email to [log in to unmask] containing the following text in the body of the message: subscribe ec-digest-l - To unsubscribe send email to [log in to unmask] containing the following text in the body of the message: unsubscribe ec-digest-l - To change your email address, simply unsubscribe the old address and subscribe the new one. - Send other administrative requests to [log in to unmask] - For further information about the digest, see http://ec-digest.research.ucf.edu -------------------------------- End of Evolutionary Computation Digest ********************************
