Active Sunspot

Space Weather News for June 12, 2010

ACTIVE SUNSPOT: A new sunspot has popped up and it

is crackling with solar flares. Today, AR1081 has unleashed

a series of M- and C-class eruptions plus at least one

strong shortwave radio burst detected by amateur radio

astronomers on the Pacific side of Earth. High resolution

movies of the flares and an audio recording of the solar

radio burst may be found at

New Comet in the Morning Sky

Space Weather News for June 8, 2010

NEW COMET McNAUGHT: A fresh comet is swinging

through the inner solar system, and it is brightening rapidly

as it approaches Earth for a 100 million mile close

encounter in mid-June. Comet McNaught (C/2009 R1) has

a vivid green head and a long wispy tail that look great

through small telescopes. By the end of the month it could

be visible to the naked eye perhaps as bright as the stars

of the Big Dipper. Because this is the comet's first visit

to the inner solar system, predictions of future brightness

are necessarily uncertain; amateur astronomers should

be alert for the unexpected. Visit

for sky maps, photos and more information.

^ New TechTalk DATV Article on

Overview of DVB-T Modulation

Hi Bryon N6IFU,

This month I wrote a new DATV article for our local Orange

County ARC newsletter.

This month’s article....

^ TechTalk86 – Overview of DVB-T Modulation for DATV

takes a look at DVB-T, the second most popular modulation

protocol for ham Digital-ATV. The article describes the

capabilities of the three modulation schemes that can be

selected for DVB-T...QPSK, QAM-16, and QAM-64.....and

also describes the Power-Amplifier de-rating that is needed.

Near the end of the article is a table of PROs and CONs

comparing DVB-T with DVB-S and also with ATSC protocols.

This DATV article can be found at the OCARC WEB site at

I thought you and your readers might be interested to

learn a little more about DVB-T. Ken W6HHC

^ ATV Globe Trotter

By Mario, KD6ILO

Hi Bryon and all veiwers and operators on amateur television

it was other great week as I dropped in on many of my favorite

repeater sites. I got to tag along on a flight on a Cessna 172

with Dave, M0SAT in England and hatched a ride with Mike,

N6BYH as he conducted a ATV mobile operation. Also got

some good technical help from Rob, M0DTS for my Comtech

2.4GHz transmitter project, well let's see what happened...

Saturday June 5th 2010 @ 11AM PT. A+

This weekends net was excellent, George, AC6RB ATN-CA

linked the W7AMQ Portland, Oregon ATV repeater video

and audio feed to W6ATN Santiago Peak repeater via his

Internet repeater patch. Our host Ed, WB2QHS on the

W7AMQ ATV repeater was notified of the event and the

users of the repeater as well as guest on the batc chat

room were happy to see the event take place. Ed also

linked my video feed as well as Ken's, KA7OSM to the

W7AMQ repeater so we could pass our well wishes to all

that were present to participate that Saturday morning.

Dennis, WA7DRO gave a tour of his shack that morning

and so did Ed, we also got to see more of Steve, K7SF

using his 700 pound ATV transmitter as explained by

Dennis in our last newsletter. Steve your picture has

improved a lot in to pass three weeks. We also had Carl,

NB7C check in from Idaho he will be getting active on ATV

soon in his location and has showen much interest in the

mode.Here were the participates;

^ GB3KM ATV Group

Sunday June 6th 2010 @ 1PM PT. A++

I am never disappointed when I participate with this group

of fine British amateur radio ATV operators. This past

Sundays net had great participation by both repeater users

as well as guest on the KM stream. Rob, M0DTS answered

a lot of technical Q & A from the stream even from me

concerning the Comtech 13cm 200mw transmitter that I

am getting ready to operate on field day. He really can

Miltie-task he even answered a call on HF from G4PBP

when answering questions, showing off his SDR software

which he uses to study how well his ATV signal is working

during transmission. He was also working on other ATV

frequency with Terry, G1LPS. He also showed off his well

installed antenna set-up at his QTH. Thanks Rob for helping

us with our technical issues or questions, that's' what

amateur radio and ATV is all about speaking and showing,

looking at what we have done with our equipment, shacks

and improvements in the mode of operation and its' FUN!

This net lasted for quite awhile, not just checking in to a

ATV net but being productive as well. Here were the check

and 5 other guests ( calls or names unknown)

^ GB3GW ATV Group

Sunday June 6th 2010 @ 12PM PT.

This was my very first visit with this group of ATV operators

pictures were great. Host was John, GW3JGA and he

introduced me to the users on the repeater who were not

monitoring the stream. It was just a small get together of

these senior operators which had some great pictures.

The audio from the repeater was "very loud" not sure why?

Nice group and I will be visiting again soon. Here were the

check ins;

Monday June 7th 2010 @ 7PM PT. A+

Always a pleasue checking in with the Portland,Oregon

group. This friendly group of ATV opreators always makes

you feel welcomed  and makes you feel right at home.

Ed,  WB2QHS or Dennis, WA7DRO are always ready

to patch your Skype, VZOChat or BATC stream to the

W7AMQ ATV input so you may say hello to the group

monitoring the  repeator. They always welcome internet

link-ups from guest. The welcome mat is always their

to welcome in so please drop by on Sunday mornings

@ 11AM PT or Mondays @ 7PM PT.  Here were the

check ins: AC6RB, KD6ILO, WA7DRO, WB2QHS,

KC9PNN, KA7WQF, KJ7SU, K7SF. I my have missed

someone if  so I'm sorry.

^ N6BYH ATV Repeator

Monday June 7th 2010 @ 7:30 PT.

Got to see live mobile ATV operation via N6BYH with a

great P5 signal by Mike. I just dropped in to say hello

along with guests, W6RAY, KI6STK. Nice work Mike

and a great P5 signal also by Ray, W6RAY. See you

guys on again soon & 73.

Tuesday June 8th 2010 @ 3PM PT. A++

M0SAT, Dave gave us a video flight tour to Cornwall,

England as he piloted a Cessna 172 along with Jeff,

M1AHN if they were to drive to Cornwall it would take

them about six hours, but since they were flying it would

ownly take them two hours to get there. Its was a great

flight cut short due to cloud cover as they were flying VFR

and had to return to home base. The flight video was

excellent from take-off to landing. Thanks Dave! you are

always a great host to use all and also sometimes a very

funny man hi hi! Check ins were; M0SAT, M1AHN, KD6ILO

and MW3XW from Whales. By the way they re-fueled and

tryed it again and completed their flight. I have something

in common with both Dave and Jeff, we are both ham

operators and aviators.

Tuesday June 8th 2010 @ 6PM PT. A++

Again great participation by the ATCO repeater group with

host net control Art, WA8RMC. The repeater signal that

evening was down to about a P3 with color, audio was good,

but due to weather it affected the 10Ghz repeater link. But

the net went on also via 2m voice and some members with

video to the repeater. Art showed a video by WB6NOA,

Gordon West at the ATV Form at the Dayton Hamvention

as best he could. The same video was also showen on the

W6ATN ATN-CA repeater group via Santiago Peak last week.

Thanks Art for a great program and to all the ATCO repeater

users for the welcome always a pleasure dropping in, 73!

Here were some of the check ins; AC6RB, KD6ILO, K8DMR,

Tuesday June 8th 2010 @ 7:30 PM PT.

It was a short net that evening no programs were schduled,

host/net control was Mark, W6MAF. My video came in via

AC6RB's internet repeater patch, thanks again George with

that link-up. If not for George, I would have to go portable ATV

to get a 434 RF signal to Santiago Peak every Tuesday

evening as my 2.4 unit is not ready yet for operation and I do

not have a good line-of-sight to the repeater from my QTH.

W6WYN, AL who is more south then I am also from San

Diego gets a P5 receive signal from Santiago Peak, but he

can't seem to get his 434 signal to the site as he did in the

pass as he told me he had not made any changes to his

ATV set-up. So it has to be with the 434 receiver settings

at Santiago Peak. I told him to check with Mike, WA6SVT.

Here were the check ins for that evening; W6WYN, KD6ILO,

Well have a great week everyone and I'll see you all on

"Amateur Televisons World Wide Network" 73!

Oat Mtn. News

^ 3 GHz Output

Over the weekend I heard Dave, KA6DPS talking with

another ATVer about the 3 GHz output on Oat Mtn..

Dave said that he heard that all the equipment needed

to add the 3 gig output to Oat was in hand but he didn't

know what the hold up is.

So it sounds like the 3 GHz output could be installed

Repairs Needed for the ATN-CA Repeaters

1. Establish link from Mt. Potosi
Mt  Wilson:

Saw testing on 3/21/10.on 434 MHz and it was working
Oat Mtn.:
1. Replace plastic wire ties with appropriate fasteners.
2. Tune 2.4 GHz link dipole for better SWR. It would be a

good idea to sweep the 1200 MHz antenna at the same

    time as well.

3. 3 GHz output could be installed anyday 6/15/10.
Santiago Peak:
1. Remove KC6UQH's call and Palomar from the W6ATN

repeaters ID's (late spring early summer 08 when the new controller is installed)

(Removable requested buy the Palomar Amateur Radio Club and KC6UQH in 2007)
2. Look into weak signal getting into one of the inputs.

3. Find intermittent receive problem for link from Oat Mtn..(1/24/09)

4. Resolve problems with WiFi getting into receiver for Snow Peak

    & Point Loma (April 28, 2009)

Snow Peak:

1. 2.4 Ghz input is operational but has audio problems due to

receiver problems on the network hub.. July 23, 2009

2. The 1200 MHz output does work and you can watch.

3. Get repeater back on the air.

Point Loma, W6RDF: No Repairs Needed/Fully Operational

   Trustee Robert Swain, KA4JSR

1. Off the air do to AC problems at the shack.

2. 434 input unuseable (4/03.01)
