Update on the ISS Columbus Module Amateur Radio Station

AMSAT News Service Bulletin 094.06
April 4, 2010
BID: $ANS-094.06

The Amateur Radio on the International Space

Station (ARISS)international team met for

the monthly teleconference on March 16.
Two highlights of the meeting include the

planned installation of VHF and UHF FM

amateur radio equipment and possible

digital amateur television from the Columbus

module at the International Space Station.

The installation of the Ericsson radio used

by ARISS in the Columbus module is scheduled

to be done by astronaut Mike Fincke, KE5AIT on
the STS-134 shuttle

flight planned for late

July 2010. ESA hopes to have a special contact

to commemorate the first operation of amateur
radio in the Columbus Module.

Gaston Bertels, ON4WF reported that the

Amateur Radio - Columbus (ARCOL) Working

Group is currently proposing the flight of

a digital amateur television (DATV) system

to downlink TV on S-band. ARISS US team

members Mark Severance N5XWF; Mark Steiner

K3MS; Lou McFadin W5DID; Kenneth Ransom

N5VHO; Rosalie White K1STO; and Carol Jackson
KB3LKI are assisting.

The Digital Television capability, under

consideration for installation by the ESA

in December, 2010 poses technical challenges.

The biggest technical challenge is the

obtaining of a suitable power supply. Gaston
is working with ESA to resolve this.

While DATV from the Columbus

module will

open up an exciting new capability for

education contacts, it will require a more

capable ground station to receive the S-band

DATV signals. This has implications for the

existing telebridge stations, including how

the DATV images would be routed to the event

sites. Gaston will be establishing a working
group to help tackle these two challenges

(reception and passing to the event site),

and is actively soliciting volunteers to help out.

The ARCOL group has already accomplished

the assembly and installation of the L- and

S-band patch antennas mounted on the exterior

of the Columbus Module.

[ANS thanks the ARISS team for the above

^ DATV Question

Last week I printerd the following Question and below

you will find the responses from Pat, G4EKD

Hi Bryon

For the ATV Newsletter under the Digital headline.

When using DATV on 70cm, 436.00 MHz we use an up

converter to convert 70cm to L Band to enable the signal

to be received on a satellite receiver.

This means building an up converter or buying one ready

made, quite costly.

There are UHF to L Band up converters available sometimes

on Eaby for $10 to $20 These have been used in the US

Cable TV networks for viewing Digital TV sent on the cable

at UHF on a regular satellite receiver.

One example of this is the Glencom VC510. This has a

LO frequency of 1,950 MHz so that 436 MHz is converted

to 1,514 MHz It requires minor modification to remove the

cable coupling components and it is then ideal for feeding

a digital satellite receiver from the up converted 70cm signal.

My question is do any of you know where to get these surplus

cable TV up converter from?

Please let Bryon know for the next issue,

send your reply to

Thank you Dave for sending me your question.

^ Response to QUESTION

Hi Bryon

I use a DIRECTV SUP-2400 up converter which comes

from USA i did a small convertion on it and works fine

into a comag receiver. I have converted several of the

units all work for local hams on 70cms d-atv .the cost

was £ 5.00 each.  They are on E-BAY about the same cost.

I have told Rob M0DTS about them and he has put a mod

on his website ..I have no website. It is a cheap converter

to get you receiving; Hope this ok for you.

  and follow up email

Hi Bryon

A little more info, the convertion I did was a simple mod

and so required a preamp, The preamp I converted was f

rom mini-kit wide band, retune to 70cms again a simple

hope dave g8adm finds this of use  73 G4EKD Pat

Thank you Pat for all your input. N6IFU
