DATV RF Bandwidth

From Ken W6HHC

This month I teamed up with Hans Hass DC8UE (near Hamburg)

to write a new DATV article for our local Orange County ARC

newsletter.  Hans-DC8UE is one of the sysops at the DB0DLH

DATV repeater in Hamburg and had helped me last month to

write up details on the repeaters design article.

This months article....

TechTalk81 –

Understanding DATV RF Bandwidth for DVB-S

takes a deeper look at DATV RF bandwidth.  It turns out

that we have found that defining QPSK RF Bandwidth

deserves some additional explanations in order provide

a full understanding.

This DATV article can be found at the OCARC WEB site at

I thought you and your readers might be interested.

BTW - Hans has also translated TechTalk79, TechTalk80

and TechTalk81 into German language versions.  The

Deutsche versions of these DATV articles can be found

both on: in Germany (look in the

downloads areas) and also on Ken W6HHC

Thank you Ken. N6IFU

News Blackout

A couple months ago Mike Collis, WA6SVT contacted me with

an email and informed me that he wouldn't be sending me any

more news about ATN.

This wasn't a problem for me and the newsletter. I have been

reporting the local news from what I see on ATN. And it has worked

out fine. In fact I have always got most of the news from on-

air- QSO's.

Good move Mike. Thank you.

^ I Have Been Wrong

by N6IFU

On the ATN-CA repeaters there is all kinds of "Hate Speech"

and "Personal Attacks " focused on ATVers for things a simple

as having a political affiliation or having an opinion. I have seen

other ATVers be uncomfortable with these kind of subjects

being on ATV.

I have been racking my brain to think of a way to express this

subject to the local readers so it might find it's way to the "ATN

Winter Meeting" and maybe stop the attacks. .

I started thinking of who is making the hate speech? And who

is making the personal attacks on other ATVers? Who are

the "Haters". And I realized that all of them are long timers to ATN.

And they are all part of running the repeater network. And they are

also close friends of Mike Collis, WA6SVT. And he owns most

of the repeaters and the club.......... And it became clear....

  ^  I have been wrong.

I have been a ham radio operator for quiet a while and I have

always operated under the impression that Amateur Radio was

a noble and respected hobby. And along with the License

you were given the responsibility to up hold the integrity of the

I now see that ATN really has a different prospective. The

hate speech and personal attacks have been going on for

years. I was told that there used to be over 100 ATVers in

Orange County alone the Haters were able run off every one

of them. And considering that the Haters are only a very

small number and a very small fraction of the membership

of ATN, that is impressive.

Things make sense now. Things I have been told so many

times. Things like, ^ ATN has been doing it like this

for 12 years and were not going to change anything. And,

If you don't like what we're doing why don't you build your

own ATV repeater and run it the way you want to. How could

I be so dumb.

This is the way it is going to be on ATN and I have wasted years

trying to make it more in the image of what I thought Amateur Radio

was about. I apologize. I guess you could call me a "Goody

2 Shoes" when it comes to Amateur Radio.

And to show you that I am truly sorry I am going to help you

by promoting your style of ATV, the ATN way. Thinks like giving

the very small group that has been around for years doing their job

a special name. Like "Haters" or "THE ATN HATERS" or

maybe the Mad Haters, you know kind of a play on works for

the Mad Hatters. Well maybe not that one so I will stick with

ATN Haters for now.

To also help I added a new section to the ATV Newsletter to support

all the hate speech and personal attacks you can dish out

every week from now on. Check it out at the end of this

I am going to try and report all the hate speech and personal

attacks that I see on ATN.  And I will publish them each week.

But I may miss some of the attacks so it would be a good idea

to shoot me of an email and let me know who you attacked, and

what you said. That way you will get all the recognition and accolades

and respect that you deserve for carrying out the way of ATN.

You might want to consider making "Hate Dates" which would

put a time and day that you would like to attack someone

so everyone can tune in and watch. You could even have a "Hate

Net" and have it just before or just after the ATN Net. That way

you would have more people tuned in and already watching. I will

be happy to list and publish all your Hate Dates. Act now and

reserve your Hate Date before all the good time slots are taken.

You could have "Hate History", and remember people

you have humiliated in the past. Or you could have a

"Hate-O-Rama" once a year and just go nuts. The possibilities

are endless. And I am going to be there helping you along the way.

I am not going to become an ATN Hater and am going to

remain a Goody 2 Shoes. And as for the rest of the goody 2

shoes that are on ATN, your on your own. If I were you I would

learn to be an ATN Hater or watch out. Only time will tell

before you receive your first personal attack. And these guys

are good at humiliating a person. I have seen Haters set on the

air and talk for hours about how much they hate you and how

stupid you are. And for God's sake don't ever have an opinion.

And I have heard them go on and on about the METS ATV

repeaters here in Southern California as well as the San

Bernardino Microwave Society. All Religions, all races and

all nationalities are not out of bounds either.

If you are smart you should just leave ATN right now and do

something else with your Ham Radio time. And that's because

nothing is going to change at ATN.

I am going to print next weeks edition of the ATV Newsletter

a day early this week so I can get some last minute ideas

to the ATN Haters before the Winter Meeting. So deadline for

copy this week will be Thursday at Noon.

The few ATN Haters are pioneers and are breaking new ground

for Amateur Radio and ATV. A new way to look at Amateur

Radio so it fits into today's society. Breaking ground that could

be the future of ATV repeaters and ATV clubs all over the world.

Now get out there and hate!

Repairs Needed for the ATN-CA Repeaters

1. Establish link from Mt. Potosi

2. Repair 900 MHz output transmitter and reinstall

3. Get repeater back on the air.
Mt  Wilson:

No one using Mt. Wilson at this time, condition unknown.
Oat Mtn.:
1. Replace plastic wire ties with appropriate fasteners.
2. Tune 2.4 GHz link dipole for better SWR. It would be a

good idea to sweep the 1200 MHz antenna at the same

    time as well.
Santiago Peak:
1. Remove KC6UQH's call and Palomar from the W6ATN

repeaters ID's (late spring early summer 08 when the new controller is installed)
2. Look into weak signal getting into one of the inputs.

3. Find intermittent receive problem for link from Oat Mtn..(1/24/09)

4. Resolve problems with WiFi getting into receiver for Snow Peak

    & Point Loma (April 28, 2009)

Snow Peak:

1. 2.4 Ghz input is operational but has audio problems due to

receiver problems on the network hub.. July 23, 2009

2. The 1200 MHz output does work and you can watch.

3. Get repeater back on the air.

Point Loma, W6RDF: No Repairs Needed/Fully Operational

   Trustee Robert Swain, KA4JSR

1. Off the air do to AC problems at the shack.

Mount Potosi:

Hate Speech & Personal Attacks

on ATN-CA, this week!

This New Section of the ATV Newsletter is dedicated to

the great men that run ATN, the ATN Haters.

On Saturday KA6DPS, Dave, who is also known as Rocking

Chair or Rocking Chair Dave, was talking to W6MAF on the

ATN ATV repeaters. And the subject of the Tea Party came up.

Dave said that Ed, K6UUZ was a "Tea Bagger" and that all the

Tea Baggers were a bunch of bitter old people. Way to go Dave.

Dave is one of the of the best when it comes to ATN Haters. Not

only was it connected to current events but Ed was in the Hospital.

So Dave was able to insult Ed and know that Ed wouldn't hear it.

Nice touch Dave. How dare Ed have a political affiliation with a

group that Dave doesn't like. I think this is Ed's first attack so

get ready for round two.

FYI: Dave has said many times on the air that he doesn't ever talk

about politics or religion on ATV. Except when you are attempting

to humiliate someone and then there are no rules. Go Dave.

You are the best.

Here's another, two weeks ago W6MAF, Mark was running the

ATN Net and he took a shot at N6ESW, Mike. He said something

about inviting N6ESW to the ATN Winter Meeting so he could

be part of the entertainment. And Dave KA6DPS made a cross

with his fingers as if someone was warding off a vampire. They

laughed and laughed because it's a fun thing to humiliate

someone during the net. This is all an inside joke. To explain:

last year N6ESW debated an opinion he had at the ATN

Winter Meeting and was very vocal and animated in his debate..

N6ESW should have known better than to express an opinion

especially at the Winter Meeting. This should be a warning

to newcomers to ATN. Remember, No opinions.

I would have to say that Mark kind of mailed this one in. He

could have done a lot better with all the material he had on hand

and ground N6ESW into dust.

Maybe you can do better and attack Mike during this years

Winter Meeting. You will have a captive audience and you can

humiliate N6ESW in front of the whole club. Let me know if

you need some help with some jokes at Mike's expense.

Just thinking. Maybe you guys should think of a way to rate hate

speech and personal attacks so we can keep a score card and

rank the ATN Haters. Think about it.

If you would like to tune in and watch all the fun on ATN just go

to your computer and go to this web address:

Warning: This web site may contain video and language

not considered appropriate for Amateur Radio and Amateur

Television. Watch at you own risk. The ATV Newsletter

can not be held responsible for the content of this web

site.  and then click on ATV Repeaters and once

that page opens scroll down until you find "W6ATN" and

click on it then click on "view stream" and in a short time

you will be watching ATN.

See you all next week. The ATV Newsletter will be coming

out a day earlier so I can give you guys some additional help

before the Winter Meeting..

Keep on Hate'n

How to Destroy Creditability the ATN Hater Way.
