DATV Repeater Designs

Here is some great information on DATV

from Ken, W6HHC

Hi Bryon N6IFU,

Robbie KB6CJZ and I have teamed up to create

another DATV article for our local club (Orange

County Amateur Radio Club) newsletter.

This article focuses on the design details

of three different DATV repeaters. First,

we look at a very simple DATV repeater

design that is proposed for W6ZE. Then,

we look at the first operational DATV

repeater in the US, WR8ATV in Columbus,

Ohio. Finally, we

look at the design of the
first DATV repeater in Australia to go 100%

DATV output, VK3RTV near Melbourne. The

title of the article is TechTalk79 -

Comparing DATV Repeater Designs - Part 1

The article can be found on the OCARC web

site at

We would like to give special thanks to

Peter Cossins VK3BFG for sharing detailed

information on the VK3RTV DATV repeater

and for answering our many questions....

and also to Art Towslee WA8RMC for sharing

detailed information on the WR8ATV DATV

repeater and answering our many questions.

I hope that some of your readers may find

this article useful. Ken W6HHC, Orange County ARC

Oat Mtn. News

^ What's up on Oat?

Everything is working well with Oat Mtn. right now and there

are all kinks of rumors of repairs and improvements happening

I was told buy an ATVer that Oat has it's 3 GHz output

antenna installed and ready for the hardline. And that there

were requests for donations to purchase stainless steal

clamps to attach the hardline. ( I received an email from

one of my readers about a year ago that was in the hardline

clamp business and offered clamps to Mike at no cost.

I forwarded the email to Mike. If the reader who made the

offer reads this please send me a note and I will pass

it along once again.)

I heard that Mike K6LDK had sent Mike Collis $100.00.

As for the 3 GHz transmitter for the 3 GHz antenna I don't

know what is happening. I understand that Alan, W6IST

had completed building a tripler but no news if it has

been mated to an amplifier yet.

There was also some talk about a new 900 MHz output

antenna has been acquired and this one has a down-tilt

so ATVers close to Oat Mtn. will receive a better picture.

From what I have been told the new antenna needs to be

One of the control operators also said the Mike is going

to modify the 400 MHz receive antenna to improve our 434

signals going into Oat.

There has also been some interference showing up on the

900 MHz output from Oat. It is in the nature of solid

horizontal bars that start weak and get stronger until

they are very strong. Arrangements have been made

to find the source of the problem.

Santiago Peak

The ATV repeater on Santiago Peak had another power

outage this week and there was some problem with the

power generator burning up something. It seems that

Santiago has lost power about a half dozen times in the

last few months.

Santiago has also had a problem with a signal keying

up the transmitter or "chattering" the repeater. For example

the counter on the Santiago I.D. screen normally shows

about 400 +or - for a full 24 hour period. One day the counter

requested 17,227 key-up's in 24 hours.

This Saturday morning everyone woke up to Santiago's I.D.

being gone and a screen from the "Amiga" computer that runs

the controller instead. And they were perplexed as to what

In the past we used to get this screen when ever an ATVer

from the METS repeater would go out mobile to map the

repeaters coverage. His repeater is on the same frequency

and is in very close proximity to the Santiago repeater so

it would key-up Santiago from time to time. One of the control

operators on Santiago would get very upset when this

happened because he would have to reset the computer via

1200MHz FM because of the "chattering" causing the Amiga

to freeze up. So the control operator would key-up Santiago

from his station and set back and read the newspaper until the

METS ATVer would stop transmitting.

Someone said the this new problem signal is from a TV Station.

I wouldn't be surprised if we start seeing Santiago being

protected in the same way it was in the past.

Someone also commented that he was watching the 5 GHz

output on Santiago one evening and watched it drop off to

almost nothing and the next day it was back to normal. He

said that he thought the 5GHz output was the next thing to

go bad on the network. He might want to consider that the

problem might be do to ice build-up on the antenna or he

was right and the transmitter is going south.

^ ATN-CA Repeater Report

Mark, W6MAF was talking about Blueridge on Monday

and he announced that the Blueridge repeater had some

problems after a power outage on the mountain top.

He said the there was no output on 900 MHz and there

was also a problem with the camera mounted on the tower.

Repairs Needed for the ATN-CA Repeaters

1. Establish link from Mt. Potosi
Mt. Wilson:
Oat Mtn.:
1. Replace plastic wire ties with appropriate fasteners.
2. Tune 2.4 GHz link dipole for better SWR. It would be a

good idea to sweep the 1200 MHz antenna at the same

    time as well.
Santiago Peak:
1. Remove KC6UQH's call and Palomar from the W6ATN

repeaters ID's (late spring early summer 08 when the new controller is installed)
2. Look into weak signal getting into one of the inputs.

3. Find intermittent receive problem for link from Oat Mtn..(1/24/09)

4. Resolve problems with WiFi getting into receiver for Snow Peak

    & Point Loma (April 28, 2009)

5. Install new 5 GHz transmitter once it is repaired (3/10/09)

Snow Peak:

1. 2.4 Ghz input is operational but has audio problems due to

receiver problems on the network hub.. July 23, 2009

2. The 1200 MHz output does work and you can watch.

Point Loma, W6RDF: No Repairs Needed/Fully Operational

   Trustee Robert Swain, KA4JSR

1. Off the air do to AC problems at the shack.

Mount Potosi:
