Oat Mtn. News

^ Oat Lost Audio

On August 21, Friday the Oat Mtn ATV repeater lost audio

just before 4:00 PM local time while K6LDK (Mike) was having

a QSO with someone on Santiago Peak.

K6LDK continued the QSO via the 2 meter talk-back frequency.

I happened to notice one of the other ATVers on Oat Mtn.

key up the repeater at 5:00 PM and he had no audio. I called

one of the Santiago ATVers by using a text message on my

ATV video saying "Can you hear me". Answer no. I called on

the 2 meter talk-back freq. and he responded that he could

hear me and then he called me back on the 2 meter talk-back

freq. and I could hear him. So we had video both ways with

no audio on the ATV signal. And audio communications were

capable only on 2 Meter talk-back frequencies.

At about 6:00 PM K6LDK came back on the air and he was

no longer able to communicate with Santiago using the

talk-back freq. and nether could I. I suspect that the remote base

was turned off.

The talk-back freq. does still work among the local users

here on Oat.

Spencer, N6IWY and Bob, W6KGE made the trip to the repeater

on Tuesday morning August 25th to see if the audio problem

could be resolved.

Here is the email Spencer sent to the Oat Mtn. Custodian

as well the board of directors:

^ Hello Mike,

Here is the status on the Oat Mtn. ATV repeater.  Today,

Aug. 25th, Bob W6KGE and myself Spencer, N6IWY

make a trip to the repeater site to see if we could

determine what the cause of the audio failure was.

All of the connecting cables were OK.  We did some

tests with a tone generator connected to the audio ports,

bypassing the controller, and were able to pass the tone

to the receiving station at Bryon's, N6IFU.

It appears that the controller is the problem and now

we need someone with expertice to fix it.

^ Spencer, N6IWY

Alan, W6IST is the Custodian for Oat Mtn and I have been

told he is unavailable at this time. So we will have to wait

until he is available before things move forward.

Last time the controller was serviced it needed an additional

port to allow a 2.4 GHz input. While the controller was getting

it's new port the Oat Mtn. repeater was slaved to Santiago

allowing operation. The controller was on the bench for 10

months getting the port and Mike (WA6SVT) told me that

he burned the controller up and had to rebuild it.

In the past there has been problems at the repeater site

with plugs being pulled out, BNC connectors unlocked and

left barely touching, and one time Alan and myself found that

the power cord had been unplugged from the body of a cooling

fan at the top of the cabinet and rerouted through the

equipment about two feet below the fan on the other side

of the cabinet. So it didn't just fall off.

I checked with the site owner to see if anyone had been

at the facility at the time the problem started and he informed

me that no one had been at the shack all day. Thank you Mr.

Site Owner

Friday morning August 28th Spencer and Bob made another

trip to the repeater site. It was determined that the problem

was do to a fault in the controller. So they were going to by-pass

the controller and slave the repeater to Santiago Peak. And

then remover the controller for repairs.

Bob and Spencer should be commended for their trips to the

mountain top with temperatures over 100 degrees and the poor

air quality from the wild fires in the area. Thanks for you work.

Bob will be making the repairs to the controller.

The repeater is operational with these exceptions: The 2.4 GHz

receiver isn't being by-passed so we have lost the 2.4 input

and the 146.43 MHz talk-back freq. doesn't work while the

controller is absent.
