World News this Week

^ Historical TV and Radio Website

Within one hour of sending out last weeks edition of the

Newsletter I received a phone call from a reader and he told

me about another website of a friend he knew.

It is the "Historical TV and Radio Website" and it's address

is  and it is owned by KA6USA,

Chuck Pharis. ( Great call sign Chuck)

I sent Chuck an email to see if he could tell us a little bit about

his website but he is out of the country at the time.

Chuck is now a subscriber to the newsletter and promised

me he would get me something in the future.

Welcome to the ATV Newsletter!

^ ATV Link from Arizona

to California?

I have received emails from three readers who have asked

about the ATN-CA link to Arizona from Southern California.

There is no link to Arizona.

I don't know where the misinformation is coming from so I will

give you all a rundown on what we have here in the ATN-CA

As for Arizona there has been talk about one day having a link

but no equipment has been established to accomplish it. It wasn't

brought up at the Winter Meeting or a Budget hasn't been submitted.

One of the real repeaters is Snow Peak and it has a problem

with it's audio output when a signal is sent to it. The audio has a

very high level of noise which makes it unusable as a repeater.

This isn't a problem right now because Snow Peak doesn't have

any users. It does have one person receiving his signal from

Snow Peak but he doesn't have a transmitter yet.

^ Mt. Podosi is in Las Vegas and in the last six years I have been

on ATV I have never seen a signal from it. There has been work

done on both ends of the link over the last couple years but there

is nothing in the way of a link at this time.

Another repeater is ^ Santa Barbara. The link to the system hub

is Santiago Peak and it is tenuous at best and is affected largely

buy conditions. But most of the time the link is unusable. The

Santa Barbara area has several ATVers and they get along very

well operating as an independent repeater. They are looking

for an intermediate relay point to solve this problem but

nothing at this time.

^ Point Loma is another repeater and it's located is in San Diego. It has

the repeater trustee as a user but we don't see him very often

and one other Ham who started setting up his ATV station

last month but hasn't been seen lately.

Point Loma is 100% operational

^ Blueridge (Frost Peak) is another repeater and it has two ATVers

using it at this time. Blueridge and Snow Peak are inaccessible

sometimes during the winter because of snow fall. So repairs

sometimes have to wait until spring thaw before they can be made.

I think it is working fine right now.

^ Mt Wilson another repeater that has had problems with it's 434 MHz

input for some time. We have two ATVers on Mt. Wilson, Matt

our 15 year old ATVer ( I bet he's 16 now) and Merv KO6E. Merv

offered to pay for repairs on Mt Wilson last week so it works like it used to

when Doug Moon maintained the repeater. I think there was a

2.4 GHz receiver installed on Mt. Wilson but no one had a transmitter

that they could point at it. Merv payed Mike, WA6SVT a chunk of

change a couple years ago to put Wilson back on the air. Matt has

been making comments on how poor his picture looks coming back

from Wilson as well. We had one other ATVer on Wilson, WB6ATN,

John. Last time I heard from him he had sent his transmitter to

Mike, WA6SVT for repairs.

The Palomar repeater is no longer linked to the repeater system

and now operates as a independent ATV repeater by the Palomar

Amateur Radio Club which it always belonged to.

^ Santiago Peak is the Hub of the repeater system and is operational

with some current problems. There is an intermittent problem on the

receiver for Oat Mtn. so sometimes Oat loses it's link for weeks.

Recently a new 5 GHz transmitter was installed and it developed

it's own intermittent problem. I have been told that one or both of the

1200 MHz transmitters have problems and need to be replaced.

Santiago has 8 to 9 regular ATVers. I have been told that Santiago

once had over 100 ATVers.

Oat Mtn. is the repeater I use and it has been working fine. It does

have it's potential problems. When the 2.4 GHz and 1200 MHz link

antennas were installed they weren't bench tested. They were made

on the mountain top and measured with a ruler. Then installed in a

dish and the dish was mounted on a commercial tower. So it will

be a major project to resolve the problem. So we don't have any

idea what the SWR was when they were installed. Last year there

was a problem with some water getting into the 2.4 GHz antennas coax

and after the water was resolved a test showed that the antenna had

a very high SWR which now needs to addressed. Same goes for the 1200

antenna, we have no idea what the SWR is. We are all surprised

at how well it works now, just think how much better it would work

if the antennas were tuned. We lost three ATVers last year because

they became Silent Keys. We currently have 11 ATVers on Oat.

I have received reports from two ATVers that there is a problem with

the 1200 MHz talk back link also.

Well, now you have an update on the ATN-CA repeaters. I suspect

that I have missed some of the other problems but this will have to

due for now.

All in all the repeater systems works pretty well even with all it's warts.

And I want to thank all the people that take time to maintain

the repeaters. Job well done.

Point Loma Link Off

While watching a recording of this weeks ATN Net it was

discovered that the Point Loma port into Santiago Peak was

off. And had been off for sometime.

When it was turned on during the net the bumble bee buzz that

I mentioned in the ATV Newsletter, had returned. (March 3rd edition)

And after the net was over you could still hear the bee buzz and

it was chattering the repeaters on and off.

I heard the codes and the link from Point Loma was turned off

again at 9:15 PM, about an hour after the net closed. The buzz

stopped and so did the chattering.

^ We do have a new ATVer in San Diego. His name is Tom

and his call is KD6MES. I don't know if he is aware that the

link to Santiago Peak was off, maybe for several weeks. Did

anyone tell him?

I first made contact with Tom the last part of January and he was

working into the repeater with 1/4 wave ground plain antennas.

Tom, I guess you are going to have to call on 146.43  MHz

with a PL of 100 Hz and see if you can raise a control

operator so you can have the link turned back on when

you want to get into the network.

In closing, when this problem first came up the finger was

pointed at Palomar as the source. This should put that

thought to rest.

^ New Weak Signal Problem

There is another weak signal that is getting into the ATN-CA

repeaters. It has cropped up in the last couple weeks and at

first ATVers thought it was a new operator working on his

I have been able to see some of the P! to P2 pictures and

figure out what I was seeing. First I was able to make out

a Ford Logo then I saw a screen from a Verizon ad on

commercial television. Then I saw the Albertson's Supermarket

logo and later I saw the Target logo.

I have tried to match the programing by watching channel 2,

4, 5, 7, 9, 11, 13 as well as KDOC and ION TV that come

out of Orange County. I have not been able to nail down the

TV station.

I don't think this signal is coming from a news truck because

I don't think that it would be transmitting commercials. And a

news truck wouldn't be setting at one location for a couple

I think that the weak signal is coming from commercial TV

and it maybe from a fringe area like San Diego, Santa Barbara

of somewhere to the east of us. I could be wrong.

The only other option would be an ATVer broadcasting commercial

TV over ATV frequencies.

Repairs Needed for the ATN-CA Repeaters

Mt. Wilson:
1. Install 2.4 GHz Receiver ????
2. Build and install 2.4 GHz receiver for link from Blueridge (on hold 5/5/08)
3. Might need an additional port on the controller????
Oat Mtn.:
1. Replace plastic wire ties with appropriate fasteners.
2. Tune 2.4 GHz link dipole for better SWR. It would be a good idea to sweep the

1200 MHz antenna at the same time as well.
Santiago Peak:
1. Remove KC6UQH's call and Palomar from the W6ATN

repeaters ID's (late spring early summer 08 when the new controller is installed)
2. Look into weak signal getting into one of the inputs.

3. Find intermittent receive problem for link from Oat Mtn..(1/24/09)

4. Check into potential problem with 1200 MHz transmitter or amp.(1/24/09)

5. Install new 5 GHz transmitter once it is repaired (3/10/09)

Snow Peak:

1. Repair noise problem on audio.

Letters to the Editor

Very Angry Reader

After printing the verse from Rudyard Kipling last week I

received an email from a very angry reader. He was upset

with someone telling him that he couldn't hate someone

and still be a man. He demanded that I print Rudyard's

call sign and email address. And he also said that he bet

that Rudyard wasn't his real name, and maybe I wrote the

The very angry reader went on to tell me that he is tired

of people outside the ATN telling us what to do. And

the club had been doing fine for over 12 years without

any change. And no one is going to change it.

He went on to tell me that he hates EchoLink because it isn't

RF. He also hates streaming the repeaters video because

every time he keys up his transmitter he feels like someone

is peeking in his windows. And computers and the Internet

should have nothing to do with Ham Radio. And most of all

he hates me and the ATV Newsletter because I tell everyone

all about ATN-CA.

He also explains to me that ATN is not a Club. ATN is owned

by Mike Collis. And the membership will never have an opportunity

to vote on anything of importance unless Mike approves

it ahead of time. And if he doesn't like it the board will turn

it down and it won't be placed on the "Agenda". And he also

said that ATN would, fix my wagon, very soon.

The very angry reader went on to suggest that I get it through

my skull and get over it.

The very angry reader told me that his email to me is copyrighted

and that I was not to forward it to anyone, and that I couldn't

talk to anyone about it, and I couldn't print it out and show it

to anyone. And most of all I couldn't print anything from it

in my Newsletter.

I replied to the very angry reader and told him that I was not

going to give him Rudyard's email address or his call sign. I

also assured him that I did not write, "If".

If anyone happens to know Rudyard's call or email address,

I would hope that you keep it to yourself.

I have reprinted Rudyard's words again (below) so there is no

Editor & Publisher of the ATV Newsletter

If you can keep your head when all about you

Are losing theirs and blaming it on you,

If you can trust yourself when all men doubt you

      But make allowance for their doubting too;

If you can wait and not be tired by waiting,

Or being lied about, don't deal in lies,

Or being hated, don't give way to hating,

And yet don't look to good, nor talk too wise:

If you can dream-and not make dreams your master;

      If you can think-and not make thoughts your aim;

If you can meet with Triumph and Disaster

      And treat those two imposters just the same;

If you can bear to hear the truth you've spoken

Twisted by knaves to make a trap for fools,

Or watch the things you gave your life to, broken,

And stoop and build 'em up with worn-out tools:

If you can make one heap of all your winnings

And risk it on one turn of pitch-and-toss,

And lose, and start again at your beginnings

      And never breath a word about your loss;

If you can force your heart and nerve and sinew

To serve your turn long after they are gone,

And so hold on when there is nothing in you

Except the Will which says to them: "Hold on!"

If you can talk with crowds and keep your virtue,

Or walk with Kings - nor lose the common touch,

If neither foes nor loving friends can hurt you,

       If all men count with you, but none too much;

If you can fill the unforgiving minute

With sixty seconds' worth of distance run,

Yours is the Earth and everything that's in it,

And - which is more - you'll be a Man, my son!
