World News this Week

Fun Was Had By All

On Saturday March 7th, an Emergency Preparedness Fair

was held in the City of Simi Valley and was well attended.

Present were the local police, fire, ambulance and other

public service agencies. There were presentations on food

storage and canning, first aid, 72-hour survival kits, water

storage, emergency power and many other displays.

Among the outside displays were 3 amateur radio stations

and an ATV station. The amateur radio stations were operating

on VHF, UHF and 20 meters respectively.  The ATV station

was manned by Ed, K6UUZ and Spencer, N6IWY.

ATV attracted many of the attendees, some of which even

wanted to see themselves on TV. Those that were on camera

were greeted by Bryon, N6IFU, Bob, W6KGE, Gordo,

WB6NOA, Bill, KF6GJH and others.

It was interesting to note that those who stopped by, the ATV

booth, had no idea of how far our ATV picture could be

transmitted and were amazed that the picture was in real-time.
We encouraged all to work on getting an amateur radio license

and join us on the air.

Our highlight for the day was connecting to Tony, LU7DTS who

was on ATV from Campanas, Argentina. Thanks to Gorge,

AC6RB for the his work on setting up this link.

A special thanks to Bryon, N6IFU and Bob, W6KGE for the

loan of equipment used to make the day a success.

Spencer, N6IWY

Comment: When Spencer first tested this site earlier in the

week, he had the transmitter antenna about 6' feet in the

air and looking through trees for along way and not true,

"line of sight" to Oat Mt.. And Bob W6KGE gave Spencer

a Great Picture Report on his signal. And here in California

the trees don't loose there leaves. All on 434 MHz

It just goes to show you that you never know until you try.

^ The Museum of the Broadcast TV Camera

Hi Bryon

I have a Broadcast TV Camera site, "The Museum of the

Broadcast TV Camera", that I have been building for a while

now. It is still far from complete but it now contains a lot of

information on American and European broadcast TV cameras.

I keep adding new pictures to it as and when I can.

I have recently moved it to a new home and I am publicizing

the new address  www.tvcameramuseum.org

As a lot of TV hams are interested in the history of cameras

and broadcast, it may be of interest to them if you wish to

give the site a mention.

More than happy to make mention of your Museum. I will also

add it to the ATV Website Guide. Thank you Brian for sending

me the information.

^ Las Vegas Radio Amateur Club

March Newsletter

It's here. www.lvrac.org.

Enjoy.

^ New ATVer in the Tacoma Area

Jerry, KD7OPE has a new 70 cm transmitter and a new

1200 MHz downconverter. He did some testing with

his equipment this week.

Everything went fine and he is now part of the ATV

world.

Welcome to ATV Jerry.

^ Follow-up on Spanish/English -

Argentina/California ATV Net

AC6RB, George one of the ATVers here in Southern California

has established this net and the first session was held last Saturday.

George had 7 ATV stations check-in from Argentina and everything

went off without a hitch. In Argentina uses PAL instead of NTSC so

their pictures were in black & white but the pictures were great.

All last week I saw George testing his system and it sure payed off.

This coming Saturday George and his friends in Argentina will be

discussing the use of a "Robot" that they plan on mounting a camera

and mic for ATV use.

Everyone is welcomed to join in. Check the time and how to log on

in the "ATV Guide" Section of this newsletter.

Thank you George.

^ Update on FRARS Live Event on BATC.TV

"Flight Refueling Amateur Radio Society".

I stayed up to watch the start of the event and fell asleep and

when I got up the next morning the event was over. If anyone

watched it and would like to send me a report I would be happy

to print it.

^ Time Change Different in UK

I remember the last time we had a time change here in the

US that the ATV friends in the UK didn't "spring forward and fall

back", on the same days as we do. So I asked the CQ-TV Editor

when it took place. Please make note of this when planning you

activity on UK streaming video on the BATC.TV at least until

March 29th.

Here is Chris' response:

Hi Bryon,

British Summer Time (BST) runs from Sunday 29 March 01:00 GMT until
Sunday 25 October 01:00 GMT (02:00 BST)

Basically, it's always the last Sunday in March that clocks go
forward and the last Sunday in October that they go back, and always
at 1am, so the clocks do this: 00:59:59, 02:00:00 in March and
01:59:59, 01:00:00 in October.

Regards,
Chris

Thank you Chris

I published the Question last week and didn't get any response

so I am printing it once again just in case someone missed it.

^ DATV Question

Hi Bryon

For the ATV Newsletter under the Digital headline.

When using DATV on 70cm, 436.00 MHz we use an up

converter to convert 70cm to L Band to enable the signal

to be received on a satellite receiver.

This means building an up converter or buying one ready

made, quite costly.

There are UHF to L Band up converters available sometimes

on Eaby for $10 to $20 These have been used in the US

Cable TV networks for viewing Digital TV sent on the cable

at UHF on a regular satellite receiver.

One example of this is the Glencom VC510. This has a

LO frequency of 1,950 MHz so that 436 MHz is converted

to 1,514 MHz It requires minor modification to remove the

cable coupling components and it is then ideal for feeding

a digital satellite receiver from the up converted 70cm signal.

My question is do any of you know where to get these surplus

cable TV up converter from?

Please let Bryon know for the next issue,

73's

Repairs Needed for the ATN-CA Repeaters
________________________________________
Blueridge:

Mt. Wilson:
1. Install 2.4 GHz Receiver ????
2. Build and install 2.4 GHz receiver for link from Blueridge (on hold 5/5/08)
3. Might need an additional port on the controller????
Oat Mtn.:
1. Replace plastic wire ties with appropriate fasteners.
2. Tune 2.4 GHz link dipole for better SWR. It would be a good idea to sweep the

1200 MHz antenna at the same time as well.
Santiago Peak:
1. Remove KC6UQH's call and Palomar from the W6ATN

repeaters ID's (late spring early summer 08 when the new controller is installed)
2. Look into weak signal getting into one of the inputs.

3. Find intermittent receive problem for link from Oat Mtn..(1/24/09)

4. Check into potential problem with 1200 MHz transmitter or amp.(1/24/09)

5. Install new 5 GHz transmitter once it is repaired (3/10/09)

Snow Peak:

1. Repair noise problem on audio.

Letters to the Editor

"IF"

If you can keep your head when all about you

Are losing theirs and blaming it on you,

If you can trust yourself when all men doubt you

      But make allowance for their doubting too;

If you can wait and not be tired by waiting,

Or being lied about, don't deal in lies,

Or being hated, don't give way to hating,

And yet don't look to good, nor talk too wise:

If you can dream - and not make dreams your master;

      If you can think - and not make thoughts your aim;

If you can meet with Triumph and Disaster

      And treat those two imposters just the same;

If you can bear to hear the truth you've spoken

Twisted by knaves to make a trap for fools,

Or watch the things you gave your life to, broken,

And stoop and build 'em up with worn-out tools:

If you can make one heap of all your winnings

And risk it on one turn of pitch-and-toss,

And lose, and start again at your beginnings

      And never breath a word about your loss;

If you can force your heart and nerve and sinew

To serve your turn long after they are gone,

And so hold on when there is nothing in you

Except the Will which says to them: "Hold on!"

If you can talk with crowds and keep your virtue,

Or walk with Kings - nor lose the common touch,

If neither foes nor loving friends can hurt you,

       If all men count with you, but none too much;

If you can fill the unforgiving minute

With sixty seconds' worth of distance run,

Yours is the Earth and everything that's in it,

And - which is more - you'll be a Man, my son!
