^ Live Event on the BATC.TV

Saturday March 7th

Last week I publish some of the Upcoming Live Events

on BATC.TV and I now have the full story on what will be happening.

The time this event will start is 2:00 AM PT or 5:00 AM on the

east coast.

FRARS

"Flight Refueling Amateur Radio Society" at Merley near

Bournemouth will be taking part in National Science and

Engineering Week with an open day for the public.

Using state of the art gear and their large dish, demonstrations

planned include 8.4GHz DX reception from distant satellite

probes and solar noise measurement. There will also be amateur

satellite operation, Baird style mechanical TV, an impressive

Tesla coil demo and a 10GHz doppler effect demonstration.

The VHF shack will be busy taking part in a contest during

the day and the HF shack will be in operation.

The event which will be open from 10 am to about 5 pm will

be streamed live on the BATC website from where it can be

watched worldwide by anyone with access to broadband Internet.

Go to http://www.BATC.tv then click on the Live events icon

and select Live Stream 1. Live events will be shown as they

happen and a caption will list timings"

Here is the FRARS website if you would like to know more

about the organization.

http://www.frars.org.uk/cgi-bin/render.pl?sessionid=&pageid=0

^ How to Stream via BATC.TV

If you would like to stream a Live Event or your ATV Repeater

or Shack here is some info from Trevor Brown that will

make it easy.

www.batc.tv is the BATC streaming site and it is open to anyone to view.

You can watch live, streamed ATV repeaters, or members channels

and view the ATV Film Library.

If you want to transmit via this site you have to be a BATC member.

BATC membership costs 4 UKP per year and enables full BATC

voting rights, and entitlement to four electronic copies of CQ-TV

magazine. These will be sent as soon as they become available

Every member is entitled to a members stream at no additional charge

and you can use this to stream video onto the internet any time.

If you would like to stream your repeater onto the internet again

there is no charge you just need to contact BATC and make the

necessary technical arrangements to have it included in the ATV

repeater section

If you would like to contribute to the Film Library any ATV related

material, then again this is welcome preferably in .FLV format

although some limited editing and conversion is available.

In addition to all this, www.batc.tv has a Live Event Channel which

again is open to everyone to view and members to transmit on.

All you need to do to switch your transmission from your members

stream to this channel is change your password. Once you have

BATC approval of the event, (and we are not difficult)   is change

the password to the Live Event password you will be given.

Changing to this password will switch your transmission to this

Live Events Channel. This I hope enables everyone to test out

technically the system on their own channel and experiment with

data rates and picture quality before transmitting major publicised

event on the Live Event Channel.

On the Technical front you need the software which is free from www.adobe.com/products/flashmediaserver/flashmediaencoder

When you install the software on your PC you are presented with

a control panel. Enter the streaming rates and format on the left

and account details on the right, these will be supplied when you

set up a channel with BATC If your computer is equipped with a

web cam then press the start button and you will go on air (live

on the net, on your channel) If you want to use a video camera

then you will need a capture device to connect the camera to the

computer, again these are not expensive at around 30 UKP.

If you want to run more than one camera as your own mini

outside broadcast OB then this is also possible and full details

are in CQ-TV 223 which is now available free to everyone on the

archive site    http://www.batc.org.uk/cq-tv/archive/2008.html

the current issue CQ-TV 225 is at the printers and will be with

Cyber Members any time now

You can join BATC on line and pay via PayPal at www.batc.org.uk

click on membership details I am sorry we charge, for membership.

We have no paid staff or premises  but the streamer is expensive

hardware, on a commercial site, where we pay rent and data

charges by the byte for all streamer communications. I know other

people operate free streaming, but with restrictions to limit data

and data charges. At www.batc.tv we work hard to remove

bottlenecks and provide the best service we can to ATV. We

also encourage commercial sponsorship of the site to help

minimize batc membership costs. Your support is vital to

ensure this service continues

Trevor Brown

BATC Chairman

               *****************************

FYI: The exchange rate for 4 UKP is less than $6.00 US Dollars

Thank you Trevor for all this great info.

^ Argentina ATV Net

The Argentina ATV Net may start this Saturday and no later

than next Saturday at 9:00 AM PT (1700 UTC).

The Net was established by George, AC6RB a well know ATVer

here in Southern California so he could communicate with his

friends in Argentina. And he will be using the BATC.TV streaming

video and EchoLink to make the two way link.

George has invited everyone to tune in here on the local ATN

repeaters and anyone else that would like to participate

using BATC and EchoLink.

To tune-in go to www.batc.tv home page and look on the left

column for a button titled "ATV Repeaters", click on that button.

You will now be on a page with a drop down list where you will

want to look for "W6ATN" and click on it. Then click watch and

you will be good to go.

If you would like to join in the Net net while watching on BATC

you can use EchoLink. You will need to subscribe to EchoLink

via the ATN website so it will operate through the ATN repeaters.

Go to www.atn-tv.org and look for a button in the top banner titled

"EchoLink" and click on it. This will lead you through the process

to set-up your connection.

^ CQ Amateur Radio Magazine

I am once again receiving a flood of new subscribers, this time

from the "CQ Amateur Radio Magazine" article.

I have sent emails to all new subscribers thanking them for their

interest and want to thank them again.

And I also want to thank "CQ Magazine" for their article.

I have always had an open invitation to all subscribers to

submit articles about the ATV activity in your area as well as

any questions you might have.

Welcome to the ATV Newsletter.

^ SBMS Meeting This Thursday

The San Bernardino Microwave Society Monthly Meeting

is this Thursday the 5th starting at 7:00 PM PT

(0300 Friday UTC)

The first hour of the meeting covers club business and a

round table from all the members and visitors describing

what they have done with microwave during the last month.

The second half of the meeting is their "Tech Talk" and

features a speaker and presentation pertaining to an element

of microwave communications. The Tech Talk is always

entertaining and educational.

The streaming video is provided by Gary, W6KVC who has

set a very high standard of production quality.

The SBMS Meeting can be viewed several ways. One is via

the METS (Microwave Experimenters Television System)

repeaters here in Southern California and the ATN-CA

repeaters as well.

You can also view the meeting via the BATC.TV streaming

video from anywhere in the world. To watch the meeting on BATC

go to www.batc.tv and look for a button on the left column

titled "ATV Repeaters" and click on it. There will now be a

drop down screen and you will need to look for "W6ATN" and click

on it. Then click on "WATCH". The the stream will load and you will

be good to go. You can even make note that you are watching

by typing in the chat room. This way you can be checked into

the meeting. You might even want to note your name and QTH

so we know who is watching.

The members of the SBMS have taken advantage of the BATC.TV

streaming video so that members that can't physically attend the

meeting can watch and check-in. The club members may want to

also begin using the EchoLink provided by ATN-CA so that they

can check-in with audio as well.

^ The Microwave Engineering Project

(http://www.delmarnorth.com/microwave/) is a high-speed

digital microwave-band system for amateur radio that supports

high-definition video, point-to-point, and multiple-access

communications.

This past week the six software development stations were

assembled and all passed their basic power-on tests. Ubuntu

linux will be the operating system for the Intel Atom 330-based

stations, and linux will be the operating system for the three

BeagleBoards (www.beagleboard.org).

If you are interested in participating, observing, or developing

a MEP station, please drop by the project website.

^ Needs Schematic for Landwehr 70 cm

Mast-Mounted Preamp

Does anyone have a schematic for the Landwehr 70 cm

mast-mounted preamp or at least information on what

FET they used?  The preamp is built like a battleship but

I lost the transistor last fall after almost 30 year of service.

From my bias setup voltage measurements it looks like it

could be a dual gate p-channel device but I don t know for

sure.  Landwehr has long merged with another German

microwave company and no longer makes or supports their

old 70 cm preamp.  The FET is unmarked.  Any help anyone?

Contact Ron, K8DMR at K8DMR@arrl.org .  Thanks

Chattering Santiago

There has been an enormous amount of weak signals

chattering the Santiago repeater on and off lately numbering

in the thousands each day.

I was told on the air by one of the control operators on Santiago

that it is thought that the Palomar ATV repeater was the source

of the problem.

I contacted Art, KC6QUH to see if he had any comments about

Palomar because he is directly involved with the ATV repeater.

Here is Art's reply:

Bryon,

Palomar is now a stand alone repeater. There is no equipment

presently installed at the Valley Center site. There is no visibility

to Santiago Peak from the Palomar Mountain PARC repeater site.

What interference ATN is receiving is not sourced from PARC.

I have no transmitting equipment installed here for 2.4 GHz

amateur band at this time.

1.       I have never received notice of the transfer of the link

coordination to ATN. It was a shared link between

       PARC and ATN.

2.       Without prior notification to PARC or me as custodian

of Palomar ATV repeater, the link was transferred by

       ATN to another ATN repeater.

3.       I do not intentionally interfere with other repeaters.

4.       I will not associate with those take what is not all theirs

Art, KC6UQH

^ Bumble Bee Buzz

Santiago Peak has also had a lot of what sounds like a Bumble

Bee buzzing on the audio output. I have been told that the buzz

comes from WiFi interference.

Repairs Needed for the ATN-CA Repeaters
________________________________________
Blueridge:

Mt. Wilson:
1. Install 2.4 GHz Receiver ????
2. Build and install 2.4 GHz receiver for link from Blueridge (on hold 5/5/08)
3. Might need an additional port on the controller????
Oat Mtn.:
1. Replace plastic wire ties with appropriate fasteners.
2. Tune 2.4 GHz link dipole for better SWR. It would be a good idea to sweep the

1200 MHz antenna at the same time as well.
Santiago Peak:
1. Remove KC6UQH's call and Palomar from the W6ATN

repeaters ID's (late spring early summer 08 when the new controller is installed)
2. Look into weak signal getting into one of the inputs.

3. Find intermittent receive problem for link from Oat Mtn..(1/24/09)

4. Check into potential problem with 1200 MHz transmitter or amp.(1/24/09)

Snow Peak:

1. Repair noise problem on audio.

Point Loma: No Repairs Needed/Fully Operational
