World News this Week

__________________________________________________________

^ Buyer Beware

Last week I published an article that mentioned the

hamtvstore web site. I received a heads-up from one of

my readers on Tuesday about the hamtvstore and an

article published in the ATVQ. Here is the email I

received:

Gene Harlan published a warning about this site, in the

'Amateur Television Quarterly' Summer 2007 issue and a

brief follow-up in the Fall issue.  According to Gene, a

number of hams claim that they ordered and paid for

items from this site, and never received the items.

Further, that attempts to contact the site operator to

resolve the various problems had been unsuccessful.

The article was titled " ATV SCAM SITE" ....

I don't know all the facts that Gene Harlan had and acted

on but I felt it was important to pass this along to my readers

as soon as possible and that is the reason I have sent out

the newsletter early this week.

This is one reason I disclose that the ATV Newsletter can not

be responsible for the content of web sites and streaming

videos listed in the newsletter.

And once again I thank my readers for helping out.

^ Argentina ATV Net on ATN

Southern California

George, AC6RB in Laguna Hill, California is putting together

something new for ATVers.

Something for ATVers here in Southern California as well as any

Internet viewer on BATC.TV streaming video all over the world.

George sent me the following email about his plan.

I will have more comments after.

Some Ham Radio Operators in Argentina have

learned about ATV thanks to the work done by

some of us here in California. And they always

ask me about the "Gentleman of the turning

office chair," (David) to whom they know well

since 1989.

This is why I am sending you this message in

order to request a couple of hours on Saturdays

so we can do a bilingual English/Spanish meeting

with Ham Radio Operators from down there (Argentina)

by using the Echolink channel for sound and a

video signal via internet for right now.

As it should be done each user will send the

pertinent request to KE6BXT, LU5DNP already did

it this week and is able to enter our repeater while

it sees us in the BATC.TV Channel.

It would be great if some of you could make be

there on these Saturdays to talk and exchange some

greetings with the users from South America.

George Migliarini (AC6RB)

                    ***************

AC6RB pioneered the use of camstreams with the ATN-CA

repeater network several years ago and also received a
"Presidents Award" from the club for his work with streaming

video.

I look forward to George's first net and I hope there will be many

visitors to his net.

Watch the newsletter for what time on Saturday the net will start.

It could be as soon as this weekend. If you want to log on to ATN-CA

and keep a watch this Saturday you need to go to www.batc.tv and

log on to KE6BXT's member stream.

^ ATV Guide new and improved!

I received the following suggestions from Dennis, WA7DRO:

I found the ATV guide helpful.  When I am checking the BATV

sites they are always off due to the 8-9 hours difference, while

the Europeans are sleeping.  I printed a copy of your ATV Guide

for my ham shack wall so that I can occasionally check in.

I translated the UTC-EST-PDST-PT to PST in bold underlined

font, so that I can glance at the wall and quickly determine if

anything is active.

I believe my math is correct but it wouldn't hurt to double

check my figures. If you find this idea helpful, please feel free

to modify and-or use it.  I think most North Americans can

quickly translate from PST to their time zone.

73's

Dennis WA7DRO Portland, Oregon

                      ****************

I think that Dennis has a fantastic idea and I have made the

changes to the ATV Guide. Thank you Dennis for taking the

time to send me your idea.

^ The Microwave Engineering Project (MEP)

http://www.delmarnorth.com/microwave/ has purchased

six development stations for continuing the project.

Three stations are based on the Intel Atom 330 boards

(D945GCLF) and three are beagleboards, which are based

on the Texas Instruments OMAP processor. This open-source

project will create stations capable of high-definition

amateur television, voice, and data transmission on the

3GHz and 5GHz bands. Both point-to-point and

multiple-access communications will be supported.

The project is open source and open invitation to anyone

wanting to participate or observe.

^ Needs Schematic for Landwehr 70 cm

Mast-Mounted Preamp

Does anyone have a schematic for the Landwehr 70 cm

mast-mounted preamp or at least information on what

FET they used?  The preamp is built like a battleship but

I lost the transistor last fall after almost 30 year of service.

From my bias setup voltage measurements it looks like it

could be a dual gate p-channel device but I don t know for

sure.  Landwehr has long merged with another German

microwave company and no longer makes or supports their

old 70 cm preamp.  The FET is unmarked.  Any help anyone?

Contact Ron, K8DMR at K8DMR@arrl.org.  Thanks

If you are interested in getting on ATV with a 2.4 GHz FM

of about 9 watts and will sell for about $1500 plus shipping

depending upon the configuration you need. If you are interested

in a transmitter you can send me an email and we can talk.

^ Please be advised that the demand for the 2.4 GHz Plug

weeks for delivery on future orders. And the transmitters

will be sold only to Licensed Amateur Radio Operators.

^ Best Picture on Santiago

I complimented Barry, N6HOG's signal into Santiago Peak this week

as being the best picture on the repeater. Barry informed me that

he was working his 2.4 GHz signal into Oat Mtn. and that was

why it looked so good.

Barry usually works Santiago at a distance of 60 some miles and

Oat Mtn. is only about 16 miles from his QTH. With his 50 watts

output he sure looks good on the repeater network.

Barry can now work either Santiago or Oat Mtn..

Way to go Barry.

^ New ATVer in Santa Barbara Area

I worked K6TZ in Santa Barbara about 45 min. before the

the net started this week. Unfortunately conditions changed

for the worst and the link was lost shortly after.

RF Viewer on Santiago

I heard a QSO with one of our ATVers and a Ham watching

with the use of a 1200 MHz downconverter and using the

146.43 MHz talk-in. I think I got his call right, AP9SP but

I could be wrong.

I would bet this is one of Gordon's people that he got interested

in ATV.

ATN-CA Repeater Report

Repairs Needed for the ATN-CA Repeaters
________________________________________
Blueridge:

Mt. Wilson:
1. Install 2.4 GHz Receiver ????
2. Build and install 2.4 GHz receiver for link from Blueridge (on hold 5/5/08)
3. Might need an additional port on the controller????
Oat Mtn.:
1. Replace plastic wire ties with appropriate fasteners.
2. Tune 2.4 GHz link dipole for better SWR. It would be a good idea to sweep the

1200 MHz antenna at the same time as well.
Santiago Peak:
1. Remove KC6UQH's call and Palomar from the W6ATN

repeaters ID's (late spring early summer 08 when the new controller is installed)
2. Look into weak signal getting into one of the inputs.

3. Find intermittent receive problem for link from Oat Mtn..(1/24/09)

4. Check into potential problem with 1200 MHz transmitter or amp.(1/24/09)

Snow Peak:

1. Repair noise problem on audio.

Point Loma: No Repairs Needed/Fully Operational

Mount Potosi:
