When we want to buy something we go to a shop. There are many kinds of shops in every town and city. We go to a baker's for bread and to a butcher's for meat.
Sugar, tea, coffee, salt, cheese and so on are sold at a grocer's. We got to greengrocer's for vegetables and fruit. Cakes and sweets are sold at a sweet-shop. But now most food-shops have several departments and they sell all kinds of food, including meat, vegetables, fruit, sausages and drinks. Nowadays there are supermarkets in every district of city with an even bigger variety of sections and foods. You go in at the front door, take a basket or a trolly and in half an hour you go out at another door with everything you need for a week or at least a few days. You pay only once - on leaving the supermarket. The cashiers add up the prices quickly on their electrical cash-machine,s and there are no queues.
When Mum goes to the supermarket, we have to accompany her, as after the visit there is much to carry home. We come in, and Mum inspects the shelves and chooses what she needs. The choice of goods is very impressive. It may seem that on the counters and shelves there is everything one can wish. There are sausages of different kinds, fish, meat and pastry. At the bakery there is bread, rolls, biscuits. At the dairy department there is milk, cream, cheese, butter, various youghurts and milk drinks, soured cream. Everything is attractively packed. We take some bread and some meat or fish. We have some fresh vegetables and some canned food for snacks and picnics.
People buy food almost everyday, often they need something else: some clothes, household utensils, stationery and so on. There are special shops for all these things; for example, you can buy shoes in a shoe-shop, clothes - in a clothes-shop, and books - at a bookseller's. But more often you go to a big department store. There are special departments for men's , women's and children's clothes, fabrics, footwear and so on. The department stores usually are not self-service shops. There is a shop-assistant in every section who shows you all the goods you are interested in. You can see the prices of goods on the labels. There are some big and famous department stores in the centre of big cities. Perhaps the most famous is Gostiny Dvor in Saint-Petersburg.
