SUBJECT: Seventh Annual “European Student Competition in Ancient Greek Language and Literature”.

REF: Our Circular letter No. 131750/I of November 20th, 2007

We would like to inform you that:

the examination date of the 7th Annual European Student Competition in Ancient Greek Language and Literature has been arranged for Wednesday, March12th 2008 at 11.00 a.m., Greek time, for most European countries (09.00 Greenwich mean time-11.00 Greek time), for the students of the last grade of lyceum in European countries.

  • As announced, the Syllabus is:

1. Isocrates Speech To Demonicus: chapters 1-52 (Ἐν πολλοῖς

   μέν, ὦ Δημόνικε…τὰς τῆς φύσεως ἁμαρτίας ἐπικρατήσειεν).

^ 2. Arrian: The Anabasis of Alexander: Book II, chapter 12 (Τῇ δὲ

    ὑστεραίᾳ…καὶ ἐπὶ τῷ δε ἐπαινῶ Ἀλέξανδρον)


Book III, chapters 1-2 ( Ἀλέξανδρος δὲ ἐπ’ Αἰγύπτου … καὶ τῶν

    ἐκ γῆς καρπῶν εἵνεκα).

Students could have based their study on the following sources:

  1. For Ιsocrates: Ed. Budé, Series: Belles-Lettres, Paris,1963

  2. For Arrian: Ed.
    Leipzig, Series Teubner, Leipzig, 1967

The texts are also available on www.tlg.uci.edu/demo.html for Isocrates

and in the Program (CD): Musaios/Thesaurus Linguae Graecae for Arrian.

  • The Competition’s topics will be sent to the schools by Fax as well as by E-mail before 11 a.m. (Greek time) in the morning of March 12, 2008; in this regard, the school’s administration is kindly requested to leave their Fax machine in function the night of the 11th March 2008 and check the school’s or Direction’s and teacher’s incoming mails accordingly before 11 a.m. Greek time.

  • The examination should last three (3) hours, beginning from the exact time the students have received the topics.

  • According to the Circular letter in the Reference, of November 2007, the examination text will be provided in its original version (Greek) and the questions will be given in Greek and English. During the examination, only a dictionary of Ancient Greek Language will be allowed. Notes or any other source of information should not be allowed by the invigilators.

  • The questions should be answered strictly in the mother tongue of the participants.

  • The examination and its invigilation will take place under the responsibility of the school authority and according to the lying legislation in each country.

  • As soon as the examination is completed, a Committee will be formed under the responsibility of the school’s authority, aiming to select the best examination paper.(WITHOUT PUTTING ANY NOTE NOR SIGNS ON THE PAPER). The selection will be done on a centigrade scale (100/100) for both parts, this means Questions of comprehension totalizing 60 points and Questions of elaboration totalizing 40 points.

  • The original best examination paper, not a photocopy one, should be sent by registered mail directly to the:

(to the attention of Amalia Rouvalis/Stylianos Moriatis), no later than Friday, April 18th, 2008 (final deadline for the reception).

  • Photocopies of the examination papers or typed papers will not be accepted. Papers sent by fax will not be accepted, either.

For further information, the above mentioned Circular letter of November 2007 is still valid.
